A letter to residential Cleco customers on bill changes
Dear Cleco Power Customer:
We want you to understand what’s driving changes in your electricity bill and offer solutions to help you manage future bills.
While multiple factors influence the price of electricity, the leading contributors are fuel costs and usage.
- The cost of natural gas, the primary fuel used by Cleco Power to generate electricity, has skyrocketed. On average, natural gas prices have increased approximately 75 percent from 2021 to today, and we expect the trend to continue. Fuel costs are a direct pass-through to customers and Cleco Power does not profit from fuel or this increase. You’ll also see this charge vary from month to month depending on the price of fuel.
- The demand for electricity increases during the hot summer months because more people use electricity to cool their homes – because of this, we see a national shift to higher market prices. At the same time, Louisiana is already experiencing higher-than-normal temperatures which lead to higher customer usage.
While natural gas prices directly impact your energy bills, these charges – along with inflation – are adversely affecting the costs for other essential goods and services such as food, housing and gasoline.
Whether we’re facing rising temperatures, storms or economic changes, we’re dedicated to providing the best possible service and helping you manage your bill. In addition to connecting our customers to federal, state and local bill assistance programs, Cleco Power offers specialized programs.
- Budget Billing: This program spreads the billing for energy usage over a 12-month period, so customers pay approximately the same amount each month. The amount paid is based on a 12-month average of actual energy bills for the previous 12 months.
- Power Wise Energy Efficiency Programs: Our On-Site Residential Weatherization program pairs customers with experts who provide in-person consultative assessments for effective, energy saving options. Additionally, the Power Wise Online Home Audit offers suggestions for home updates or simple, daily habits to lower energy usage — in 10 minutes or less!
