Net Metering

Customers using renewable energy options can apply to be a part of Cleco’s net metering program. Net metering allows these customers to receive credit for the electricity generated in excess of the electricity used by the customer.

Acceptable renewable energy sources:
  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Hydropower
  • Geothermal
  • Biomass
  • Fuel cells (generating from renewable sources only)
  • Microturbines (generating from renewable sources only)

Acceptable kilowatt amounts:
  • Residential generation up to 25 kilowatts
  • Commercial/Agricultural generation up to 300 kilowatts
  • Customer must not have any other generator connected to the grid

Net metering laws vary by state. Louisiana established a net metering program in 2003. The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) determined the rates, terms and conditions in 2005. As determined by the LPSC, the utility pays for the meter and the customer pays a one-time installation fee and monthly service fee.

Net metering meters measure electricity flowing to and from the customer’s location. If a customer produces more kilowatt hours than they use, this net excess generation sent to the grid is credited to the customer’s account. If the customer discontinues service, remaining kilowatt hours are paid out at the utility’s avoided fuel cost.
In order to be eligible, the system must adhere to the following requirements:

  • All IEEE 1547 Standards
  • All applicable safety laws
  • Must not feedback or backfeed to non-energized lines
  • All applicable national safety codes
  • All municipal/parish permitting requirements

To apply for net metering:
  • Call 800-622-6537 to place an order with a Customer Service Representative to meet with a Cleco engineer, who will assist with the interconnection.
  • Review the net metering tariff
  • Complete and sign the interconnection agreement
  • Pay associated fees
  • Mail completed Net Metering Agreement and associated fees to Address shown in the Agreement

Agreements which are not fully completed will not be accepted.
