Hurricanes

The north Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 until Nov. 30. For the latest hurricane updates, please click on the following link: National Hurricane Center.

Hurricanes come in five degrees of stregnth, based on wind speed. This is called  the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

  • Category One - sustained winds ranging from 74-95 mph.
  • Category Two - sustained winds ranging from 96-110 mph.
  • Category Three - sustained winds ranging from 111-130 mph.
  • Category Four - sustained winds ranging from 131-155 mph.
  • Category Five - The strongest category of hurricane has sustained winds greater than 155 mph.

Any storm in any of the aforementioned categories can have devistating effects on homes and property, as well as associated power outages. Cleco reminds citizens to stay away from all downed power lines and to report downed lines by calling 1-800-622-6537 or call 9-1-1 in an emergency. 

2010 Hurricane Season

Experts have predicted an average amount of activity for the 2010 hurricane season. Colorado State University is predicting 12 named storms, with six of those storms expected to reach hurricane status.
